Now, this is where it gets interesting. Thursday’s Semi Final not only offers the Swedish act but also other favourited entries like Russia, Malta, Switzerland and Azerbaijan. I’m guessing all of these will reach the top ten when we close the book on Saturday, but the predicted king of tonight’s show – and still in the lead for the total win in Saturday’s Grand Final according to the odds – is Duncan Laurence from The Netherlands.
In addition to the Swedish act we find another 6 songs written, fully or partially, by Swedish composers/lyricists in this Semi Final; Moldova, Switzerland, Denmark, Malta, The Netherlands and Azerbaijan. Additionally, Swedish producer Sacha Jean-Baptiste has created the staging for two of tonight’s entries, Sweden’s Too Late For Love and Switzerland’s She Got Me.
In addition to the Dutch broken-hearted ballad and John Lundvik’s gospel pop, the second semi-final includes a nostalgic 50s diner from Ireland, beautiful sand art from Moldova, Balkan Latino pop from Switzerland, a country ballad from Latvia, a French chançon from Denmark, a musical power ballad from Croatia, jungle pop from Malta, angst-ridden screams from Russia, Sami etno dance pop complete with joiking from Norway, and a heart surgery from Azerbaijan.
My personal favourites this evening (in alphabetic order): Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, North Macedonia and Sweden.
Qualifying for Saturday’s Grand Final according to the odds: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Denmark, Malta, The Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland.
